It’s the last week of February! The shortest month of the year has one more day in it this year, making it a leap year. What will you do with your extra day? From Mardi Gras and live music to races and discussions with chemists, there is much to explore in CU. 

Monday, February 24th 

Shake off the Monday blues by going to an a cappella performance by The Cat’s Pajamas. This vocals-only band will be performing some of today’s hits as well as classic songs at Urbana High School’s Cobb Memorial Auditorium. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Learn more about the event and the band here

Tuesday, February 25th

Celebrate all the excess of Fat Tuesday in downtown Champaign. Esquire Lounge is having an all-day event for the holiday and will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. tomorrow, with special events starting at 5 p.m. Find jazz bands, tarot card readings, New Orleans inspired food and more at Esquire Lounge. If you’re looking for some crawfish on Mardi Gras, stop by Neil St. Blues for their first all-you-can-eat crawfish boil! Thursday, February 27th

The Krannert Center for Performing Arts presents the opening night for Cabaret! See the celebration of “Krannert Center’s 50-year partnership with the School of Music, Lyric Theatre @ Illinois, Illinois Theatre, and Dance at Illinois” in this classic musical. Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are only $10 for UIUC students. If you can’t make it on Thursday, there will be performances Friday and Saturday this week, and Thursday through Sunday next week. Saturday, February 29th

What better way to start the weekend than by running? Just kidding, but there is a race that will make anyone want to lace up their running shoes and hit the streets: The 26th Annual Road Race for Animals! Run or walk this 5K with your dog, and help support the Wildlife Medical Clinic and Mobile Mutts. You can register for the race ahead of time online for $25 or day-of for $30. Leap day! Enjoy this extra day in February by going to the Leap Day Show at Seven Saints. This event is hosted by Ryan Gross, the lead singer of Elisnore, and features musical performances from Kayla Brown of Dearie & We The Animals and Paul Kotheimer. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the annex of Seven Saints. This event is FREE, so take advantage of leap day with this can’t-miss show. Learn more about the show here.

Sunday, March 1st 

Take a couple hours to learn about the future of food. If you’re interested in how chemicals affect what we eat, this is the event for you. The Younger Chemists Committee is hosting this discussion at Riggs Beer Company this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be free pizza, and Riggs’ beer to purchase. Learn more about the event here!
