We hope you all had a safe and fun Fourth of July last weekend! There was a lot to do for the Fourth, and despite many public fireworks being canceled, the community sent off many of their own. Whether you found them annoying or delightful, they’re over and we can get some sleep again. This week, there are many events to bring you out of the post holiday weekend funk.

Let’s get started with all that’s going on this week in town!

Monday, July 6th

While the Canopy Club hopes to be back in person to have their open mic nights on stage, this week you can catch local talent virtually. If you are a singer or play an instrument, this is the perfect chance for you to get out there and share your skills with the community! If you want to just sit back and enjoy the show, you can do that, too. Open mic starts at 8 p.m. and you can find the Zoom link on Canopy Club’s page. Learn more about the event here

Tuesday, July 7th

There is a very special celebration going on at The Japan House this Tuesday! The Japan House is usually closed in July, but this year they will be open, allowing them to celebrate Tanabata!

“Tanabata (七夕), also known as the "star festival", takes place on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year, when, according to a Chinese legend, the two stars Altair and Vega, which are usually separated from each other by the Milky Way, are able to meet. One popular Tanabata custom is to write one's wishes on a piece of paper, and hang that piece of paper on a specially erected bamboo tree, in the hope that the wishes become true.”

You can come by the Japan House any time on Tuesday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and you will find a bamboo branch where you can hang your wish. Learn more about this beautiful day by clicking this link

It wouldn’t be a This Week in Town if there wasn’t at least one yoga event. This virtual yoga class is hosted by Allerton Park, led by Yoga on the Square instructor, Josi. The online class begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and is free to join! (Donations are appreciated, though!) Focusing on strength and poses for posture, this class is suitable for all levels. Find the link to join the class and learn more about it here

Wednesday, July 8th

Goodthingz is hosting a virtual workshop called “Unconscious Racial Bias for White People.” Their goal is to open up a conversation about how racism is ingrained in us in ways we may not even be aware of. If you have been troubled by the current situation in the U.S., this is a good chance to listen and learn about the biases we all have. Check out the event page for more information on this series. The first workshop is Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 and the Zoom sessions will be monitored by Amy Glazik. Learn more here!

Saturday, July 11th

Riggs Taproom and Blue Dragonfly Catering are hosting a German Brunch! Stop by Riggs Taproom in Urbana between 12 and 2 p.m. for a mouth-watering selection of German dishes served à la carte. There will be a lot of German style bread and sausages! See the full menu with prices here!

Summer is prime berry picking time. Pick your own strawberries at Mariah's Mums & More this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Since their strawberries are grown in a vertical hydroponic system, berry pickers don’t have to stoop to the ground. This is probably the easiest berry picking experience ever! Strawberries are just $4 a pound. Find more information about the event and see the rules for picking by following this link.

Have a wonderful week!
