Graphic Design Student Show at Parkland Colllege!

– Opening Night Reception co-sponsored by CUDO
– Awards ceremony at 6:30pm in the gallery lounge
– Musical performance by the Parkland Guitar Ensemble

Immediately after the awards ceremony, graphic design instructor Liza Wynette will give a gallery talk and guided tour of the exhibition. In an informal Q&A with select award winners, Liza will go behind the scenes and reveal how Parkland’s Graphic Design and Interactive Design programs teach creative problem solving and design thinking.

Exhibition dates: May 15–June 1, 2017

Summer gallery hours: Mon–Thurs 10am–7pm; Closed Fri & Sat

The Graphic Design Student Juried Exhibition is an annual event showcasing the best graphic design, motion graphics, illustration and web design work of students in the Graphic Design and Interactive Design Programs at Parkland College.

For the exhibition, a jury of Parkland design faculty selected the best student work from the current school year. The exhibition gives students a chance to present their work in marketing communication, branding, advertising, and design to industry professionals and the community.

Industry professionals are invited to come in as judges and award cash prizes for excellent work. This year, the judges are Ralph Roether (Graphic Designer, Champaign Park District) and Maria Ludeke (Design Studio Manager, Neutral Design Studio).

Over $1000 in cash prizes will be awarded at the opening night reception. This year’s awards include:

– Graphic Design Best of Show ($100)
– Illustration Best of Show ($100) (sponsored by The Robeson Family)
– President’s Award of Excellence ($100)
– CUDO Award of Excellence ($100)
– Surface 51 Award of Excellence ($100)
– Studio 2D Design Strategy Award ($100)
– [co][lab] Award of Excellence ($100)
– Electric Pictures Award of Excellence ($100)
– David M. and Shirley A. Jones Student Art Award ($100)
– Fine & Applied Arts Department Chair Award ($100)
– Graphic Design Program Director’s Award ($100)

At this month’s Champaign-Urbana Astronomy on Tap we’ll be talking about exoplanets: worlds around other suns. Our host, Allycia Gariepy from the University of Illinois Physics department, will lead a discussion about what we know about these planets and how astronomers have begun to discover them by the thousands. Join us for pizza, beer, and the universe on Thursday, May 18 at 6 pm at Pizza M in Urbana, IL.

This event is hosted by the University of Illinois Department of Astronomy. Everyone is welcome to this all-ages free event.

This month’s workshop will focus on escape from holds. It will take place 11AM-2PM on Saturday May 20th, at Gracie Barra. Have you ever felt nervous while walking alone, wondering what if someone jumped and grabbed you? How would you react if you were pushed up against a wall while being choked? Do you know how to disengage and get away? We will cover these situations and many more throughout the workshop. Start training now to handle these situations. That way you’re ready if anything were to happen. Workshop fee is $50.

Sympmhony of  Homes is hosted by Preservation and Conservation Association and takes place on Sunday, 12PM-2PM. Visit five homes from the past century on this charming brick-paved boulevard, now a thriving, interactive neighborhood.
