Memorial Day Weekend is coming up in just a few days. While the town celebrations and larger gatherings will be put on hold, we can still celebrate the memory of those who bravely died serving our country and protecting our freedoms. If you know someone who has served, definitely take some time this weekend to say thank you!
While we can’t have a BBQ or go to parades like usual, there are ways to make this weekend special. This week’s DIY includes recipes to make your day sweeter and more patriotic and a way to make soldiers overseas feel remembered. Let’s get started!
Red, White, and Blue Chocolate Chip Cookies
Sure everyone says apple pie is America's favorite dessert, but I think chocolate chip cookies give it a run for its money. They are part of some great childhood memories and are so comforting. This patriotic take on the classic cookie makes this treat stand out. You’ll need ingredients for a basic chocolate chip cookie plus red and blue food coloring. Split the dough into three separate bowls before adding red coloring to one and blue to another. Then form your cookies with a mixture of all three doughs, making a red, white, and blue swirled cookie! Find the complete recipe from Cookies & Cups right here!
Patriotic Berry Trifle
With fresh berries, whipped cream, and angel food cake, this trifle is a sweet and refreshing dessert that feels like summer. Trifles are notoriously easy to make as you just have to layer the ingredients. Start with the angel food cake as the first layer, then spread the whipped cream on top for the second layer. The third layer will be fresh blueberries followed by some more whipped cream before adding the strawberries. Then repeat! This bright dessert will last a few days in the refrigerator, and the second day is always the best for trifles. Find this recipe from Food Network's Sunny Anderson by following this link.
Red, White, and Blue Slushie
If you’re looking for a refreshing drink to sip while enjoying the weekend, try this adult slushie! This is the easiest patriotic cocktail recipe ever. All you need to do for this drink is to separately blend grenadine and ice, vodka, lemonade and ice, and blue curacao and ice. Then layer the slushies in a tall glass. You can also make these with kool aid if you want to have a kid-friendly drink! Find the recipe from Homemade Hooplah by clicking here.
Letter to the Troops
If you want to do something truly meaningful this Memorial Day, please write to a soldier overseas! Share a kind word or story with someone you don’t know but who is working to keep us safe. You can learn more about sending a letter to the troops by following this link.
