Although the Illini football team had a rough semester, we’re looking back at the 2017 season. Illinois lost the final game of the season to Northwestern 42-7. Illinois finished the year with a 2-10 overall record and 0-9 in conference. This may not be too surprising for those who follow the team. The team only had 9 seniors on the roster for the 2017 season. This was an exceptionally young team. In fact, Illinois is currently the youngest teams in the country. In terms of next year, linebacker Tre Watson, offensive lineman Gabe Megginson and punter Bryce Baringer will be pursuing other college football programs next season. Despite this, there’s potential among the freshman players. In fact, five of the true-freshmen were on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Fifteen players have also signed their National Letter of Intent to play for Illinois this month.
The men’s basketball team has had its highs and lows this semester. The team has a 8-5 overall record so far this semester and 0-2 record in conference. Illini had recently lost to New Mexico State on the 16th of this month after they had dominated Longwood in a 92-45 win. The upcoming annual Braggin’ Rights game against the Missouri Tigers is an important game for Illini. In 36 years of the event, the Illini have a winning record of 24-12 against Missouri.
The women’s basketball team has a 9-4 overall record this semester. With 5 new players and 11 underclassmen on the team, the women’s basketball team has a young roster compared to other teams in the Big Ten. Compared to the Men’s basketball team, they’ve also had a better luck with a 4 game winning streak.
Track and Field
The men’s and women’s track and field teams will start their season early in January. In July, coach Mike Turk had announced five more additions to the 2018 Track and Field team with a total of eight incoming freshmen. This includes Ayo Abiona who was the 2017 Illinois Top Times Long Jump Champion and Jason Shannon who placed third in the 60m at 2017 Illinois Top Times meet.
Baseball / Softball
The baseball season will start in February. The Illini Baseball team received some new talent for the 2017-2018 school year. Among them are Jimmy Burnette, Ryan Kutt, and Grant Van Scoy. Jimmy Burnette had helped his high school to a IHSA Sectional title. Ryan Kutt was the 2016 Chicago Catholic Blue Conference Baseball Player of the Year. Grant Van Scoy, who will transfer to Illinois, captained his high school team two times and junior college team once.
The head coach of the Softball team had signed 7 athletes for the 2018 season. This includes Avrey Steiner, Zaria Dunlap, Abby Sagert, Danielle Dennis, Sydney Sickels, Hannah Sasaki and Kailee Powell.
The men’s golf team won its 3rd consecutive Big Ten Championship title in April. The men’s golf program has had 8 Big Ten titles in the last 9 seasons. The coach, Mike Small, had announced 4 new players to the 2018 team last month. Luke Armbrust, Adrien Dumont de Chassart, Noah Gillard and Tommy Kuhl will be joining the golf UIUC sports team next season. Luke Armbrust was the 2016 IHSA Class 2A State Champion and Noah Gillard was the 2017 IHSAA Boys Golf Individual Champion.
With many new and talented players joining UIUC sports teams, Campus Property Management is sure to gather some new highlights next year.
